The ERAS Society published consensus recommendations for breast reconstruction in 2017; reviews show better pain control, fewer opioids and shorter stays, including in outpatient surgery.
ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) is a bundle of measures before, during and after surgery: patient education, nutrition and avoiding prolonged fasting, multimodal analgesia that reduces opioids, nausea control, early mobilization and clear discharge criteria.
The ERAS Society published its breast reconstruction consensus in 2017, developed by an international panel from meta-analyses and clinical trials. Later reviews (2023–2024) document better pain control, lower opioid use, shorter stays and cost savings, with emerging evidence in outpatient procedures.
Implementation remains incomplete in many centers: the guideline exists, but not everyone applies it.
Ask whether your team follows an ERAS or enhanced-recovery protocol: what you will eat beforehand, how pain will be managed without relying on opioids and when you will be up and walking. A written recovery plan is the mark of a serious team.
